Registered-agent guide

Illinois registered-agent requirements.

Understand who can serve, what address is required, and why service-of-process handling is an ongoing obligation.

Every Illinois LLC needs a registered agent

The registered agent receives service of process and official correspondence for the company.

The registered office must be in Illinois

The registered office must use a qualifying Illinois street or road address and match the registered agent’s business office. A P.O. box alone is not acceptable.

An individual or qualified entity may serve

An eligible Illinois resident may serve, or a properly authorized entity may provide registered-agent service.

The address becomes part of the public filing record

Owners should understand the privacy and operational consequences before listing a home address.

The company must keep the information current

If the agent or registered office changes, the LLC should complete the appropriate Illinois change filing rather than simply allowing the old information to become inaccurate.
